The late Samuel B. Forney influenced scores of music students over the course of more than three decades and his influence will continue with a new fundraiser being organized in his name by the Greencastle-Antrim Band Boosters.
The first Forney Classic Golf Tournament will be held Saturday, April 13, at Greencastle Golf Club.
Forney passed away from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma on Nov. 10, 2013, at the age of 58 and 10 percent of the funds raised at the tournament will be donated in his honor for local cancer research, said James Reaves, tournament chair.
“We’re trying to show the kids how to give back to the community they are a part of and to honor Mr. Forney,” Reaves said.
The remainder will be used by the band boosters to help with expenses not covered by the school district — everything from new instruments to guard flags — for grades five through 12.
Forney dedicated his life to his music programs and was Greencastle-Antrim High School band director for 32 years. He directed the field band, concert band, indoor guard and percussion and jazz ensembles.
